BERTICA GARCÍA DUBUS was born in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. She began her art studies at Saint Dominic College in Saint Charles, Illinois, receiving a Bachelor in Arts degree in Fine Arts. After being immersed in many techniques and mediums, Bertica was most attracted to oil painting and drawing. Upon graduation, she furthered her academic studies in art choosing to concentrate in the classical and realistic style.

Through art she has discovered that the ability to see light and shadow and learning to recognize beauty in the simplest object, not only leads to joy but provides a valuable learning tool. Bertica considers herself privileged to have had the opportunity to develop a trained eye and hopes that through her works others will come to see and appreciate the beauty and goodness of God’s creation. Critics have described her style as realistic in nature, and her paintings as figurative works that tell a story with warmth and feeling. 

Since moving to Phoenix, Arizona in 1985, Bertica also turned her eye for detail, color and design to good use as a graphic artist and illustrator, both on staff at various advertising agencies, and presently on her own.

Over the course of her career, Ms. García Dubus has participated in solo and collective exhibitions in the United States and in the Dominican Republic. On three separate occasions her works won awards at the Bienal E. León Jiménes in Santiago, Dominican Republic, perhaps the country’s most prestigious juried art exposition. She is commissioned on a regular basis—privately and publicly—and has created specific works which hang in private homes and institutions.

Presently, she is teaching art to students Kindergarten through 8th. grade at St. Theresa Catholic School in Phoenix, Arizona. Her mission is to develop and teach a lasting art program that will not only open her students’ eyes to Truth, Beauty and Goodness (thereby bringing them closer to God), but that also will encourage creativity and self expression. She is an advocate for art to be taught in schools and believes that all children benefit greatly through art as it helps them relate visual knowledge to other core subjects.
